Nvidia is proving itself a key beneficiary as technology companies "spend like crazy" to take advantage of artificial intelligence, according to Melius Research. "Sometimes a no brainer is a no brainer," analyst Ben Reitzes wrote on Monday. Reitzes' bullish take is tied to how aggressively he says technology companies and fellow chipmakers are pursuing artificial general intelligence, or artificial intelligence most closely akin to human reconnaissance. Nvidia will remain an essential piece of any tech firm's AI pursuits, he said. NVDA YTD mountain Nvidia stock.

Apple is wrapping up a rough quarter, but history and Wall Street analysis show there is reason to expect a bounce ahead. Apple shares have typically risen following a quarter that ends down at least 10%, according to CNBC Pro data. 'Best bought on weakness' Despite the tough period, Wall Street sees reason for optimism ahead. Apple "is a stock best bought on weakness in general as they probably have the best, or one of the best management teams in the world," Mahoney said. In the median quarter following the losing one, shares jumped more than 14%.

The hottest artificial intelligence event of the year kicks off next week, setting the stage for key AI players to see sharp moves. Nvidia's GTC Conference, dubbed "AI Woodstock" by Bank of America, offers an opportunity for the company to showcase its latest AI chip innovations and future vision as it labors to maintain its dominance in the field. The product is expected to offer a slew of "architectural innovations" and better performance than Nvidia's flagship H100 chip, wrote New Street's Pierre Ferragu. According to Wedbush's Matt Bryson, the new chip could benefit the liquid cooling industry that may fuel power-hungry data centers. "As such, we believe any system NVDA announces that includes liquid cooling technology could effectively dictate the path of liquid cooling moving forwards and thereby determining winners and losers in the server and cooling space," Bryson said.

But the tides have shifted in recent months as investors overlook the $2.6 trillion company for rosier AI opportunities. "Everybody's waiting for Apple to come along," said Max Wasserman, co-founder and senior portfolio manager at Miramar Capital. "Great cash flow, great balance sheet, but they're just not demonstrating that they're going to be the new leader in AI." Apple's AI story Last month, Apple pulled the plug on its decade-long autonomous vehicle project in what many on Wall Street viewed as a move to divert resources toward AI prospects. Another way Apple could satisfy the need for AI progress is through a merger or acquisition of a company with large-scale AI capabilities, Meeks said.

We knew Apple's China market wasn't great. Jim Cramer said the stock could fall another 5% to $160 in its current run of bad form. Jim also maintained his "own it, don't trade it" Apple mantra because the stock is "one of the greatest performers of all times." Apple shares have shed roughly 14.5% from their all-time high of $199.62 each and nearly $3.1 trillion market value on Dec. 14, 2023. The CEO said Apple AI tech is already being used in the Vision Pro mixed reality headset's hand-tracking tool.

If that return isn't there, will they keep ordering the latest and greatest Nvidia chips? Despite the overall improvements in availability, Nvidia on Wednesday indicated it will face supply-and-demand imbalances with its upcoming AI chips. The U.S. government has said its export controls are designed to keep high-powered AI chips out of the hands of the Chinese military. In the November-through-January quarter, China accounted for a mid-single-digit percentage of Nvidia's $18.4 billion in data center revenue, according to the company. The fact Nvidia still booked China revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars means it could take a further hit in the region.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, arrives for the Inaugural AI Insight Forum in the Russell Building on Capitol Hill on Sept. 13, 2023. Nvidia's stock price has soared fivefold since the end of 2022, as demand has skyrocketed for its graphics processing units that sit at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom. Nvidia's chips, such as the H100, are used by AI developers to create cutting-edge models like the ones OpenAI used to develop ChatGPT. The company's market cap climbed to about $1.8 trillion last week, surpassing Alphabet and Amazon and now trailing only Microsoft and Apple . "NVDA's stock appreciation has been parabolic," analysts at Bank of America wrote in a report Thursday.

Tuesday's inflation data sent the broader market reeling, making stable stocks more attractive for investors worried about further losses. Because of this, CNBC Pro screened for low-volatility, fortress-like names that can perform well if the drawdown continues. She pointed to growth of a media business as something that could help Costco win market share and create a better margin profile. While more than three out of every five analysts polled by FactSet has a buy rating on the stock, the typical price target reflects shares pulling back by 1.5%. The average price target reflects the likelihood for more rallying ahead with an upside of nearly 15%.

We agree wholeheartedly, having cheered Nvidia's software push for nearly a year . Software and services "Nvidia's business is evolving faster ... and software sales can help smooth out volatility," Melius analysts argued. In December, analysts at Piper Sandler also struck a bullish tone on Nvidia's software opportunity. The core of Nvidia's software strategy is DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputer accessible through a web browser, that the company rolled out in March 2023. The differentiated aspect of the DGX Cloud is it also has additional AI software and tools, such as pre-trained models, data libraries and access to Nvidia service representatives.
